mike_petroffMike Petroff, Digital Content Strategist at Harvard University, is one of the 13 higher ed professionals presenting at the 2014 Higher Ed Content Conference.

Mike supports the strategy, creation, and curation of content for Harvard University’s main web properties and associated sites.

In this 3-question interview, Mike tells us about a content challenge, a secret weapon to create better content and shares some advice.

1) What is the biggest challenge you face in your day-to-day work on higher ed content?

The biggest challenge on a day-to-day basis is balancing ephemeral content opportunities with long-term projects. Maintaining a shared editorial calendar has been a great tool for collaborating, identifying upcoming events, and targeting dates for long-term project goals.

2) What is your secret weapon to get better higher ed content created?

My secret weapon is getting out from behind the desk and meeting with people in person. There are so many great storytellers around a school, and opportunities to connect and facilitate discussions are essential.

3) What piece of advice would you give to somebody who wants to improve digital content?

Improving digital content starts with improving the internal culture. Start by identifying projects that will help guide conversation around how digital technology is changing behaviors, and how the school’s content can be better prepared and served to meet the needs of the audience.
