Michael Powers is Director of Web Services at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he has worked since 1999. A former English professor, Michael coded his first HTML in 1993 when he probably should have been reading Shakespeare.

Since that time, he has moved from web-enabled English professor to e-learning developer to web developer and then to his current position.

As IUP’s Director of Web Services, Michael has overseen the university’s transition from its static HTML website to its first content management system. He has worked to leverage the CMS throughout IUP’s communications infrastructure, including the development of *IUP Daily:* a daily e-mail newsletter for faculty and staff that draws on content from the university website. This publication has served as the model for several similar e-mail publications including newsletters for parents, alumni, and, very soon, students.

Michael serves on IUP’s Academic Computing Policy Advisory Committee and its Emerging Technology Committee. He has presented on user research at eduWeb and blogs over at Museyroom.

    Just wanted to drop you a note about your HEE presentation on developing web content back in May. I thought it was well done. I particularly liked the interactive parts. I invited our entire campus web contributing community. Attendance was about 15-20 people for each of the three days.

    I also wanted to thank you for highlighting a bit of my writing. I was responsible for the example of the brand message you used in your day-two presentation:

    “A degree from Widener is more than a piece of parchment. The Widener experience will take you outside the classroom and out of your comfort zone for the ultimate self-improvement project.”

    I’m always looking for a constructive reality check from outside my usual circle, so I was pleased to see that you thought I put together a couple of good sentences. Especially as the brand voice!

    So, I’m curious about the rest of the copy I sent along. I’d be grateful for a few thoughts and any suggestions from you as to how I might improve.
