Joshua Dodson, Director of Digital Marketing at Bentley University, is one of the 12 presenters of the 2017 Higher Ed Content Conference (the 4th edition!).
In this 4-question interview, Joshua tells us about an exciting content project, a favorite tool, the place of SEO and shares a cool video with us.
1) What is the most exciting content project you’ve worked on over the past year?
When I was still at SNHU I worked on a substantial SEO-driven content initiative. This included long and short-form articles published daily. Now that I am at Bentley University, I have been working with the team to create additional articles for SEO purposes..
2) What is your favorite tool to use when working on content projects?
I am a big fan of Google Keyword Planner, BrightEdge, and MarketMuse.
Google Keyword Planner is the free keyword research tool that Google provides as part of AdWords. It is a great way to see what people are searching for.
BrightEdge is the golden standard for SEO research, monitoring, and analysis. One of the biggest benefits is its ability to let you see both your full SEO footprint (all of the keywords you rank for), as well as your competitors’ footprint. It is great for competitive intelligence and to assess your progress.
MarketMuse is a fantastic tool for topic modeling–the newest, important aspect of SEO. It helps you identify keywords you can use together to show Google that you are an authority on a topic.
3) What is the place of search engine optimization in your content creation and distribution process?
SEO is where I focus my efforts. The team at Bentley is great at looking at where there are SEO opportunities and building them into the process. It is important to take advantage of the opportunities when they arise, but not to force keywords into every single item. A campus event announcement probably doesn’t need multiple keywords worked into the copy.
4) Video has become a key format. Can you share the most successful video produced at your school?
Bentley is celebrating 100 years as a school this year, so there have been several videos recently that focus on that. It is a big celebration. One recent video is the following:
